SCOTT GAYLORD CLOSE, BUT NOT QUITE
|
MIDLAND, Texas (September 23, 2002) -- Scott Gaylord was back on
track this weekend as he and his team joined back up with the NASCAR
Winston West Series at Douglas County Speedway. The last time the
series visited the track was back in 1971 when it was a quarter-mile
track.
|
Although the team had just arrived at the half-mile Roseburg,
Oregon facility for the first time on Saturday, they had already been
prepping for this event weeks in advance. They had taken careful
planning reviewing their notes and setups from the previous tracks
they had visited on the circuit.
"We didn't have the luxury of testing, so we had to go back and take a
look at what [setup] had worked for us before." Said Gaylord. "But not
even seeing this track before makes it a little difficult, and a lot
of it is just an educated guess."
They must have guessed right as Gaylord circled the track with amazing
precision and was able to put the Oliver Gravity Separators on the
pole with a new track record. Marking the first time that Gaylord had
won a consecutive NWWS pole. His time was 15.836 Seconds, 113.665 MPH.
When the Green flew the #00 took off. Gaylord managed to lead the
first 115 laps of the 200-lap event. Unfortunately trouble occurred on
that 115th lap that caused him to lose control of the car and caused
damage to the vehicle.
Although not an "official victory" for the team Scott Gaylord and the
entire crew should leave with their heads held high knowing that they
have managed to put together very promising runs. But with this team
it is not budget that has put them up front; it is a combination of
skill and persistence that is paying the dividends for the team.
The next event for Gaylord Racing will be at the 1.5-mile
state-of-the-art Las Vegas Motor Speedway, on October 12th.
