2001 REVIEW:          Sean Woodside, who won his third consecutive Bud Pole Award, dashed into the early lead and set the pace for the first 72 circuits. Brendan Gaughan shadowed Woodside in the early stages of the event, before moving to the front with Kevin Richards in his wake. Richards challenged Gaughan for the top spot, with the pair swapping the lead back and forth. Richards ran out of fuel and dropped off the pace, however, leaving Gaughan to run out front for the majority of the remaining laps. Johnny Borneman charged to a runner-up finish, with Woodside taking third.

·         Fifteen drivers in the series will share a combined $50,000 from the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., as prize money for the NASCAR Winston West Series Leader Bonus program for 2002 is to be distributed at prior to the start of the race at Irwindale.

·         Brendan Gaughan and Bobby Dotter, both running the full schedule in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series this year, dominated recent NASCAR Winston West Series competition at Irwindale. Gaughan won all three times the series visited the .5-mile track last year and Dotter won two of three races in 2000. They are the only drivers with more than one win at Irwindale. Drivers with a single victory there include Steve Portenga, Austin Cameron and Joe Bean.

·         The eight visits by the series to Irwindale have resulted in seven different drivers winning a Bud Pole Award. Sean Woodside, who set the fast-time mark in the last two visits, is the only multiple winner of the award. Those with one Bud Pole at Irwindale include Cameron, Dotter, Gaughan, Butch Gilliland, Sammy Potashnick and Mark Reed.

·         Gaughan leads many categories in series competition at Irwindale. He has the most top-five finishes, with six; the most top-10 finishes, with seven; the most money won, with $71,690; and the most laps led, running out front for 674 laps.

·         Sixty-nine different drivers have taken the green flag in the eight series races at Irwindale Speedway. Seven drivers – Cameron, Gaughan, Portenga, Potashnick, Sedgwick, Eric Norris and Kevin Richards – competed in all eight of those events.

·         A Chevrolet has been in victory lane following seven of the eight series races at Irwindale.

STATS OF THE WEEK:

·         Only one of the eight series events at Irwindale was won by a driver starting from the Bud Pole position. Dotter did it in the first visit to the track in 2000.
